History of Edinburgh Airport
During World War I, the Royal Flying Corps called Turnhouse Aerodrome their most northern air defense base. When it opened in 1916, the small base was used to house the DH 9As, Westland Wapitis, Hawker Harts, and Hawker Hind light bombers of the 603 Squadron.
When the Royal Air Force was established in 1918, the Air Ministry took over ownership of the airfield and its subsequent renaming to RAF Turnhouse. When World War II broke out, the Royal Air Force's Fighter Command took over the airfield. A runway 1,189 meters in length was built to accommodate the Supermarine Spitfire. Three squadrons (3, 65, and 141) were stationed at the airfield during the Battle of Britain.
Even after the war ended, the military kept control of the airfield. In 1947, it was declared open to the public for the first time. Initially, the airport only served British European Airways' London (Northolt) to Shetland route. The cities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen served as staging areas. A Douglas C47, capable of carrying 18, was used.
